Bharat Diamond Bourse had the honour of hosting H.E. Professor Anil Sooklal, High Commissioner of South Africa to India, based in New Delhi, along with Mr. Gideon Labane, Consul General of South Africa in Mumbai, and a delegation of senior officials from the Consulate on 29th April 2026.

The delegation was received by BDB President Anoop Mehta, Vice President Mehul Shah, and committee members.

South Africa holds a significant position in the global diamond pipeline, being one of the important sources of rough diamonds. Strengthened engagement with that country could play a key role in ensuring stability in supply, enhancing trade partnerships, and creating long-term value for BDB members.

The delegation toured the Bourse campus, and experienced at first hand its world-class infrastructure and secure trading environment.

Subsequent discussions between the two sides focused on strengthening India–South Africa ties within the diamond trade, exploring new avenues of collaboration, and building stronger institutional ties between the two ecosystems.

Emphasising that India and South Africa have enjoyed a special friendship for over 200 years, Mr Mehul Shah VP, requested the High Commissioner to ensure faster visa processing with longer validity for BDB members and employees. “Such a step will enable greater ease in doing business and smoother rough diamond supply with S.A. companies,” he added.

Mr Shah also suggested that the government and trade should consider displaying their rough diamonds at the India Diamond Trading Company (IDTC) within the bourse, so that many more members of the trade, especially MSMEs, can get the opportunity to receive direct supplies from the mines.

The visit builds on other recent engagements, including the BDB DSFS Brass Band’s participation in South African Freedom Day celebrations in Mumbai, further strengthening cultural and diplomatic connections.
